A studio maternity session does not have to mean wearing a dramatic gown in every photograph. Some of my favorite indoor maternity photoshoot ideas use much simpler styling. Bodysuits, denim, bare belly images, silhouettes, fabric, black and white photographs and relaxed portraits with your partner.
With studio maternity photography in Dallas, we can change the lighting, wardrobe, background, and overall feel without leaving the studio. That gives us room to create several noticeably different looks while still keeping the finished gallery consistent.
What Can You Wear for Indoor Maternity Photos Besides a Gown?

Gowns can absolutely be part of your session, but they do not have to be the entire session. Combining one statement gown with simpler clothing is often one of the easiest ways to create more variety. Depending on the style you want, maternity photoshoot outfit ideas can include fitted pieces, denim, fabric, bodysuits, or clothing you already own.
A Simple Black Bodysuit. A fitted black bodysuit creates a clean, modern maternity look without adding a lot of detail around the body.
It works especially well for:
- Side profile maternity photography poses
- Seated photographs
- Close up belly images
- Barefoot portraits
- Dramatic studio lighting
- Black and white photographs
Black clothing also gives me more freedom to shape the image with light rather than relying on the outfit itself for visual interest. If you are drawn to darker styling, my Black Outfit Maternity Photoshoot Ideas post includes more ways I use black wardrobe pieces during studio sessions.

Jeans and a Bare Belly
Jeans create an entirely different feel from a traditional maternity gown. They can be paired with a bodysuit, simple bra, bandeau, cropped top, or open shirt. Leaving the jeans slightly open also frames the belly naturally without requiring much additional styling.
This is one of those setups where good posing matters more than adding accessories. Small adjustments to the hips, shoulders, and hands can completely change how the body photographs.

An Oversized White Button-Down
A simple white shirt can create several different looks within the same setup.
It can be:
- Worn loosely buttoned
- Left open over a simple undergarment
- Pulled slightly off one shoulder
- Paired with denim
- Draped around the belly
For maternity photography in Dallas, I like having simple pieces mixed into a studio session because they create a softer contrast to more formal maternity styling.

Fitted Dresses That Show Your Shape
A maternity dress does not have to be a large couture gown. A simple fitted dress keeps the focus on body shape and posing while still giving you a polished look. Solid black, cream, neutral, or other simple colors tend to photograph particularly well in the studio. Fitted dresses are also useful for clients who want a more understated option for photographs with their partner.
Fabric Maternity Photos
Fabric gives us movement without requiring another full outfit. Depending on how it is wrapped, draped, or held, one piece of fabric can create several completely different photographs. The important part is how the fabric falls around the body. After photographing maternity sessions for years, I have found that even a small change in the direction of the fabric can alter the shape of the belly, waist, and shoulders in the finished image.
My Maternity Photos with Fabric Movement post shows more ways fabric can be used during a studio maternity session.
Maternity Silhouette Photos
Silhouettes are one of the looks that are much easier to control in a studio environment. By changing the direction and intensity of the lighting, I can emphasize the outline of the belly while keeping the rest of the photograph intentionally minimal.
Silhouettes work particularly well with:
- Bodysuits
- Fitted dresses
- Bare belly looks
- Fabric
- Partner photographs
For clients searching for studio maternity photoshoot ideas, this is an easy way to add something dramatically different without requiring another elaborate outfit.

Black and White Maternity Photography
Black and white images can make a very simple studio setup feel much more editorial. Removing color places more attention on light, expression, posture, and body shape. I especially like black and white for close crops, silhouettes, seated photographs, and images with a partner. I do not convert photographs to black and white simply for variety. The lighting and composition need to support it.
Bare Belly Maternity Photos
Bare belly photographs can still feel refined and intentional. A bodysuit, open shirt, denim, or fabric can reveal the belly without requiring a completely nude maternity look. Hand placement becomes especially important here. The position of the hands can define the belly, waist, and upper body without making the pose feel forced.
Working with an experienced maternity photographer in Dallas also means you are not expected to arrive knowing exactly how to pose. I direct the placement of the hands, shoulders, hips, feet, and face throughout the session.
My post on What a Professional Maternity Photographer Actually Helps With goes into more detail about that process.
Seated Maternity Photography Poses
Not every maternity photograph needs to be standing. Seated poses can change the lines of the body while also giving you a break between standing setups. Depending on the photograph, we may use a stool, chair, floor pose, or another simple studio setup.
I pay particular attention to:
- Leg placement
- Shoulder position
- The angle of the belly
- Hand placement
- Camera height
- Posture
These details are especially important with professional maternity photography because a small camera or body-angle change can make a significant difference in the finished photograph.
Maternity Photos With Your Partner
Partner photographs do not have to be formal gown portraits either. Simple wardrobe choices often work especially well for couples because there is less competing with the interaction between you. Denim, black clothing, neutral shirts, fitted dresses, and barefoot setups can all work.
We can create:
- Standing couple photographs
- Close-up interactions
- Hands around the belly
- Side profiles
- Seated poses
- Silhouettes
If you want more examples of how I direct couples, my Maternity Couple Posing Ideas post covers several poses and small adjustments I use during sessions.
Clean Editorial Maternity Portraits
Some of my favorite Dallas maternity photography setups are also the simplest. A plain studio background, intentional lighting, minimal wardrobe, and strong posing can create a much more editorial result than adding props or elaborate décor.
This style works especially well with:
- Bodysuits
- Fitted black clothing
- Bare belly photographs
- Minimal jewelry
- Simple hair and makeup
- Directional studio lighting
A pregnancy photographer in Dallas does not need an elaborate set to create variety. Lighting, posing, crop, wardrobe, and expression can change the photograph considerably even when the background stays the same.

Do You Need to Wear a Maternity Gown?
No. Some clients want several gown photographs, while others prefer only one gown and spend the rest of the session in simpler looks. Both approaches work.
My studio wardrobe includes 60+ maternity gowns, casual wardrobe pieces, and jewelry, so you do not necessarily need to purchase multiple outfits before your session. You can view more of the wardrobe on my Dallas Maternity Gowns page before deciding which looks you would like to include.
How Many Looks Should You Plan for a Studio Maternity Photoshoot?
More outfits do not automatically make a stronger gallery. Changing clothes takes time, and different looks may also require adjustments to the lighting and posing. I would rather create several noticeably different photographs from each setup than rush through too many wardrobe changes.
A session might combine:
- One couture maternity gown
- One fitted or bodysuit look
- One fabric or silhouette setup
- One casual look
- Photographs with your partner
This gives us variety without making the session feel like a constant wardrobe change.
Studio Maternity Photography Gives You More Styling Options
One advantage of working with a Dallas maternity photographer in a controlled studio is how quickly we can change the overall look of the photographs. Soft lighting can become darker and more dramatic. A couture gown can be followed by denim or a bodysuit. Full-length photographs can transition into close-ups, silhouettes, or seated poses without changing locations.
If you are still deciding between an indoor and outdoor session, my Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Photography post compares the differences between the two.

Create an Indoor Maternity Session That Feels Like You
You do not have to choose between elaborate maternity gowns and completely casual photographs. Some of the strongest maternity photography in Dallas galleries combine both. A gown can give you a dramatic statement image, while simpler wardrobe choices allow lighting, body shape, and connection to become the focus.
I help clients decide which wardrobe pieces, lighting setups, and poses work well together so you do not have to figure everything out before arriving.
