There’s a moment at the end of every maternity session when the cameras are packed away, the gowns are carefully hung back in the wardrobe, and the studio grows quiet again. For you, the experience may feel complete. For me, it’s only entering its next chapter.
One of the questions I hear most often is, “What happens now?” While the portraits have already been created, there’s still a great deal of work that happens behind the scenes before your final gallery is ready. Every maternity session goes through a thoughtful process designed to ensure you receive images that reflect the care and artistry that went into creating them.
If you’re planning a Dallas maternity photography session and wondering what happens after you leave the studio, here’s a look behind the scenes.

Every Photograph Is Reviewed with Care
During your session, I photograph a variety of poses, expressions, lighting adjustments, and subtle movements. Sometimes a small shift of a hand or a slight turn of your face completely changes how an image feels. It’s common for a session to produce many more photographs than you’ll ever see. Afterward, I begin reviewing every frame individually.
Images that are duplicates, test shots, blinking moments, or simply don’t meet my highest standard are removed. Rather than overwhelming you with hundreds of photographs, I carefully narrow the collection to the images that truly represent your session. The goal has never been to deliver the most images.
It’s to deliver the strongest ones. This first review takes time because every photograph deserves careful consideration before it becomes part of your proofing gallery.

Your Proofing Gallery Arrives Within About a Week
Within approximately one week of your session, you’ll receive a private online proofing gallery. These are not your final edited images. Instead, they’re a curated collection of the photographs I’ve selected for you to review. Each image receives basic adjustments so you can clearly evaluate composition, expression, and overall feel without waiting for the complete editing process.
I love this part because every family is drawn to something a little different. Some clients immediately gravitate toward dramatic silhouettes. Others fall in love with soft close-up portraits or quiet moments shared with their partner. There isn’t a right or wrong choice, only the images that feel most like you.
Having the opportunity to select your own favorites allows your final gallery to become more personal.

Choosing Your Favorite Portraits
Unlike photographers who choose every image for their clients, I believe you should have a voice in your final collection. After viewing your proofing gallery, you’ll select the photographs included with your collection. Many families tell me this is one of their favorite parts of the experience because it allows them to choose the images they connect with most.
As you review your gallery, you might find yourself drawn to:
- Elegant studio portraits highlighting your baby bump.
- Emotional moments with your partner or children.
- Fine art silhouettes.
- Editorial-inspired close-up portraits.
- Images that simply make you smile every time you see them.
If you discover additional photographs you’d love to keep, extra edited images are always available for purchase after you’ve made your selections. The gallery belongs to you, and your choices help shape the final collection.

The Editing Process Is Entirely Handcrafted
Once you’ve submitted your selections, the artistic work begins. This isn’t a process that’s completed with one preset or an automated editing program. Every image is individually edited by hand. That includes refining color, balancing light, removing temporary distractions, and applying professional skin retouching while preserving the natural texture and features that make you look like yourself. One of the things I care about most is creating portraits that feel polished without appearing over-edited.
I never want someone to look at their photographs and wonder who they’re looking at. Instead, I want you to see yourself at one of life’s most remarkable seasons—beautifully photographed and thoughtfully refined. Some images naturally require more attention than others.
Silhouette portraits, for example, often involve detailed blending and precision adjustments to create the clean, dramatic look that makes them so striking. Editorial images with flowing fabrics or layered gowns may also require additional refinement to ensure every detail looks intentional. This stage simply can’t be rushed. Every portrait receives the attention it deserves.

Why Editing Takes Time
When clients hear that final galleries are delivered approximately four weeks after their session, they’re sometimes surprised. The truth is that professional editing is one of the most time-intensive parts of creating your portraits.
Each selected image is opened individually, examined closely, refined, and reviewed before it’s added to your completed gallery. That timeline also allows me to give every family the same level of attention, regardless of whether their session took place yesterday or three weeks ago. Quality has always mattered more to me than rushing photographs out the door. The result is a gallery that feels complete rather than hurried.

Your Final Gallery Is Ready
Once editing is complete, you’ll receive your finished online gallery. Every edited image is delivered in high resolution with a personal print release, allowing you the flexibility to print your portraits wherever you’d like. Many families begin planning wall art or albums immediately, while others simply enjoy sharing their favorite images with family and friends. Regardless of how you choose to display them, your gallery is delivered ready to be enjoyed.

Here’s what you can expect after your maternity session:

Planning Ahead for Baby’s Arrival
Many families reserve both their maternity and newborn sessions together, making the transition from one milestone to the next seamless. Once your maternity portraits are complete, there’s often only a few weeks before your newest family member arrives. Having your Dallas Newborn Photography session already planned allows you to focus on welcoming your baby instead of searching for availability after delivery. If you’re considering documenting both milestones, it’s worth exploring newborn photography before your due date arrives.
