A maternity session should reflect the couple in front of the camera rather than rely on a standard set of poses created around traditional gender roles. For same-sex couples, that can mean approaching posing, wardrobe, and interaction a little differently so both partners have a natural place within the photographs.
For couples searching for same-sex maternity photography in Dallas, my approach is based on connection, body positioning, height, comfort, lighting, and how you naturally interact together. I have photographed maternity clients throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 2013, and I direct every session rather than expecting couples to arrive knowing how to pose. The goal is to create a varied maternity gallery with individual portraits of the pregnant partner as well as photographs that include both partners together.
You can see more about the different session styles I offer on my Maternity Photography Experience page.
How Can Same-Sex Couples Make Maternity Photos Feel Natural?

What Kind of Posing Direction Can Same-Sex Couples Expect?
The best maternity photos for same-sex couples usually do not come from assigning one partner a particular role. Instead, I look at how the couple naturally stands together and then make small adjustments that photograph well.
Some couples are naturally affectionate and comfortable with close poses. Others prefer something more understated. Both approaches can work.
During the session, I may direct you to:
- Stand beside one another rather than one partner always standing behind
- Bring your faces closer together for a tighter portrait
- Walk together during an outdoor session
- Place both partners’ hands near the belly
- Look toward one another instead of always looking at the camera
- Shift height or body position to create a balanced composition
These adjustments keep the photographs from feeling overly structured while still giving both partners clear direction.

What Are Good Maternity Poses for Same-Sex Couples?
There is no separate list of poses that couples have to follow simply because they are a same-sex couple. Good maternity poses for couples depend much more on body type, height, wardrobe, lighting, and comfort.
A few poses that work especially well include:
- Standing side by side with both hands around the belly
- One partner slightly behind with faces close together
- Forehead-to-forehead portraits
- Walking together outdoors
- Seated studio portraits
- Close photographs of hands on the belly
- One partner looking toward the pregnant partner
- A mixture of posed and more relaxed interaction
I also photograph the pregnant partner alone throughout the session. Including your partner does not mean every image has to become a couples portrait. For most sessions, I like the final gallery to contain a combination of individual maternity images, couple portraits, closer details, and wider compositions.

How Do You Pose Couples Without Traditional Gender Roles?
This is one of the most important differences in how I approach inclusive maternity photography in Dallas. I do not automatically decide that one person should be positioned as the more dominant or traditionally masculine partner while the other takes a softer pose. Instead, I look at what creates the strongest photograph for the two people I am actually photographing.
I consider:
- Height differences
- Shoulder and body position
- Which partner is carrying the baby
- How the couple naturally touches or stands together
- Wardrobe
- Lighting direction
- The overall composition
Sometimes standing side by side creates the best balance. Other times, placing one partner slightly behind creates more depth without implying a particular gender role. Small changes matter. Moving one hand, adjusting the angle of the shoulders, or changing where one partner stands can make a couple look more connected while still feeling like themselves.
That kind of posing direction comes from photographing people rather than trying to force everyone into the same template.
What Should Same-Sex Couples Wear for Maternity Photos?
Wardrobe for a maternity photoshoot with your partner should coordinate without looking overly matched. For the pregnant partner, wardrobe usually sets the overall direction first. My maternity clients have access to 60+ maternity gowns and coordinating jewelry, including casual and couture options. You can view many of those styles in my Maternity Gown Collection.
From there, the second partner’s wardrobe can complement the gown.
For example:
- A neutral gown can pair well with cream, tan, black, or muted tones
- A dramatic black maternity dress can work with a simple black or dark neutral outfit
- Earth tones work particularly well for outdoor maternity sessions
- Clean solid colors usually photograph better than large logos or busy patterns
- Similar levels of formality help the couple look cohesive
You do not need to wear the same colors. In fact, slightly different tones often photograph better because each person remains visually distinct.
For two-mom maternity photos, wardrobe can be as feminine, neutral, structured, casual, or editorial as you want it to be. There is no need for one partner’s outfit to intentionally contrast the other based on gender presentation.

Should Same-Sex Couples Choose Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photos?
Both work well, but they create very different results. A studio maternity session offers more control over lighting, backdrops, and posing. It is a strong choice for couples interested in fine art maternity photography in Dallas, black-and-white portraits, couture gowns, or a more editorial look.
Outdoor maternity photography gives us more room for movement and interaction. Walking together, turning toward one another, and incorporating a partner naturally can be easier in a larger outdoor setting.
Outdoor sessions can also be a good option when couples prefer:
- Less structured posing
- More movement
- Natural scenery
- Wider portraits
- A softer, more relaxed look
If you are deciding between the two, my Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Photos: Which Is Right for You? article compares the differences in more detail.

Can Both Partners Be Included Throughout the Maternity Session?
Yes. A partner does not need to appear only at the beginning or end of the session. I can incorporate both of you throughout while still keeping the focus on the maternity portraits.
For example, we might photograph the pregnant partner alone in one gown, add the partner for several poses, move into a second look, and then create another combination of individual and couple photographs.
That gives you more variety than separating the session into a strict “maternity portion” and “couples portion.”
For clients searching for a same-sex maternity photographer in Dallas, this is something worth asking about before booking. Not every photographer approaches couple posing the same way, so it is helpful to know whether your partner will be naturally incorporated into the session rather than treated as an add-on.

Can Children Be Included With Same-Sex Parents?
Absolutely. If you already have children, they can also be incorporated into your maternity portraits. The approach depends largely on their age and personality. Younger children may do better with shorter, movement-based interaction, while older children can usually follow more specific posing direction.
Family maternity photographs might include:
- Both parents with the children
- Each parent individually with the children
- Siblings near the belly
- Walking photographs outdoors
- A few more structured family portraits
- Individual maternity portraits between family combinations
I generally do not expect young children to stay still for every image. Working around their energy often produces better results than repeatedly trying to recreate one exact pose.
Choosing a Maternity Photographer Who Fits Your Couple
Couples should be able to look through a photographer’s work and feel confident that they will receive direction without being pushed into poses that do not feel natural to them.
For same-sex maternity photography in Dallas, I recommend looking for a photographer who can explain how they pose couples, whether partners are included throughout the session, what wardrobe support is available, and how much direction you can expect.
My maternity sessions include posing direction, wardrobe options, and help choosing between studio and outdoor photography. I also offer pre-booking consultations and studio visits for clients who would like to see or try maternity gowns before choosing a session.

Reserve a Same-Sex Maternity Photoshoot in Dallas
A same-sex maternity photoshoot in Dallas does not need a completely different set of rules. What matters is having a photographer who pays attention to how you interact as a couple and adjusts posing around the people being photographed rather than relying on assumptions.
