If you are already 36 weeks pregnant and wondering whether you waited too long to book a maternity photographer in Dallas, the answer is not necessarily. While I typically recommend scheduling maternity photos between 28 and 35 weeks, I have photographed women later in pregnancy when they are still comfortable and my calendar allows.
Every pregnancy is different, so there is not one exact week that works for everyone. For a maternity photoshoot in Dallas, the bigger considerations are how you are feeling, the type of session you want, how much walking or standing will be involved, and whether there is enough flexibility in the schedule.

Is 36 Weeks Too Late for Maternity Photos?
No. Thirty-six weeks is not automatically too late for maternity photos. At this point, your belly will usually photograph very well, and there is still plenty of opportunity to create a varied gallery. The biggest difference is that comfort becomes more important as you get closer to your due date.
During later maternity sessions, I pay closer attention to:
- How long you are comfortable standing
- How quickly we move between poses
- Whether you need additional sitting breaks
- How many wardrobe changes feel comfortable
- The amount of walking required at an outdoor location
One thing I have noticed after years of photographing maternity sessions is how much small adjustments matter later in pregnancy. Shifting one foot, relaxing a shoulder, changing the angle of the hips, or adjusting where the hands rest can make a pose much more comfortable while still creating a flattering shape.

What Is the Best Week to Schedule a Maternity Photoshoot?
For most Dallas maternity photography sessions, I recommend scheduling between 28 and 35 weeks. This usually gives the belly enough definition while still allowing plenty of room for movement, standing poses, different setups, and wardrobe changes.
The best timing can vary depending on:
- Whether this is your first pregnancy
- How you are feeling physically
- Whether you are expecting multiples
- Your photographer’s availability
- Whether you prefer studio or outdoor maternity photography
- How many looks you would like to include
If you are still earlier in pregnancy, reserving your session ahead of time gives you more date options instead of waiting until the final few weeks. You can also review my Maternity Photography Pricing to compare the studio, fine art, and outdoor options before deciding which session fits what you have in mind.

Can I Book a Dallas Maternity Photographer at 36 to 38 Weeks?
Possibly. I do accept later maternity sessions when I have availability and the client still feels comfortable being photographed. The bigger challenge at 36, 37, or 38 weeks is usually not the photography itself. It is scheduling.
Babies do not always arrive according to the calendar, and appointments or physical changes can happen quickly toward the end of pregnancy. Booking earlier gives us more flexibility if your original session date needs to move. For someone contacting me late, I usually recommend selecting the earliest available date rather than intentionally waiting another week or two for the belly to become larger.
Studio Maternity Photography in Dallas Can Be Easier Later in Pregnancy
If you are already late in your pregnancy, studio maternity photography in Dallas can be an especially comfortable option. The studio allows us to control the environment while reducing unnecessary walking. Seating, water, wardrobe, jewelry, and everything needed for the session are close by, which makes it easier to slow the pace when needed. Studio sessions can also include several different looks without traveling between locations.
Depending on the collection, we can create images using:
- Couture maternity gowns
- Simple fitted dresses
- Bodysuits
- Fabric
- Silhouette lighting
- Black-and-white images
- Images with your partner
My maternity wardrobe includes 60+ gowns, along with jewelry and additional styling pieces. Clients may also schedule a studio visit before their session to see the wardrobe and try on gown options. You can see more of the available styles on my Dallas Maternity Gowns page.
If you are still deciding which setting fits you best, my Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Photography post compares the differences in lighting, wardrobe, movement, and overall session style.

Can You Still Take Outdoor Maternity Photos After 36 Weeks?
Yes. Outdoor maternity photography in Dallas is still possible later in pregnancy, but choosing the right location becomes more important as you get closer to your due date.
Some Dallas-area locations require considerably more walking than others. When I photograph someone later in pregnancy, I prefer areas where we can create plenty of variety without walking long distances between each spot. Weather matters too. Texas heat can make an outdoor maternity session much more tiring late in pregnancy, while cooler fall temperatures may be easier physically.
Some locations also give us multiple backgrounds within a relatively small area, which can be especially helpful when minimizing walking is a priority. You can see several options in my Best Dallas Maternity Photography Locations post.
Should You Wait Until Your Belly Gets Bigger?
Usually, no. Wanting a larger, more pronounced belly is one of the most common reasons clients consider pushing their maternity session later. But your belly does not need to be at its largest for maternity photos.
Posing, camera angle, wardrobe, and lighting all affect how your shape photographs. A properly fitted gown and careful hand placement can emphasize the belly beautifully at 30–34 weeks without requiring you to wait until the final days of pregnancy.
Waiting only because you want your belly to look larger can also reduce your flexibility if:
- Weather changes
- Someone becomes sick
- You need to reschedule
- Your doctor changes your activity recommendations
- Baby arrives earlier than expected
This is one reason I prefer having the session reserved before the final few weeks.

What If I Am Already 37 or 38 Weeks Pregnant?
Contact the photographer rather than assuming it is too late. When someone reaches out to me this late, I look at the earliest available date along with the type of session they are considering. A studio session may make more sense than an outdoor location requiring significant walking, but each client is different. The pace can also be adjusted. We do not need to rush through poses or try to fit more movement into the session than feels comfortable.
A pregnancy photographer in Dallas who regularly works with maternity clients should also know how to make small posing adjustments rather than expecting every client to move or pose exactly the same way.
When Should You Contact a Maternity Photographer in Dallas?
You do not need to wait until you reach the recommended photography window before reaching out. Many clients reserve their date earlier in pregnancy and schedule the actual session for approximately 28–35 weeks.
Booking ahead usually gives you better access to:
- Preferred session dates
- Studio gown appointments
- Hair and makeup scheduling
- Outdoor location choices
- Limited weekend availability
- More flexibility if you need to reschedule

Late Maternity Photos Are Still Possible
Being 36 weeks pregnant does not automatically mean you missed your chance. With maternity photography in Dallas, my goal is to create flattering images while adjusting the pace, posing, and movement around what you are actually comfortable doing that day. That may mean less walking, fewer wardrobe changes, more sitting poses, or choosing the studio instead of an outdoor location.
If you are approaching your due date and still want maternity photos, reaching out sooner gives us the best chance of finding a date that works. We can look at your timing, session preference, and current availability and decide what makes the most sense.
